Physiological recovery: what happens, how long it takes, and when to train next. The SRA (Stimulus-Recovery-Adaptation) curve describes the process by which training stress disrupts homeostasis, the body recovers to baseline, and then supercompensates beyond the previous level of performance. Understanding the timeline of this curve for different tissues and systems allows coaches to optimize training frequency. Muscular recovery typically occurs within 48-72 hours, while connective tissue recovery may take longer. Neural fatigue from heavy loading requires its own recovery timeline. Training too soon interrupts recovery and leads to accumulated fatigue; training too late misses the supercompensation window. By monitoring performance markers and subjective recovery indicators, coaches can pinpoint the optimal time to apply the next training stimulus for each muscle group.
