When working in the neutral scapular plane, arm (and shoulder) musculature gain a natural mechanical advantage that allows them to do more work. All you need to do is to put your humerus in the right place. The scapular plane represents the natural resting orientation of the shoulder blade on the ribcage, approximately 30-45 degrees anterior to the frontal plane. When the humerus is positioned within this plane, the rotator cuff muscles are optimally aligned, the deltoid has its greatest mechanical advantage, and the biceps and triceps can produce force most efficiently. Training arm movements outside of this plane forces compensatory patterns that reduce the effectiveness of the target musculature and increase stress on passive structures. By simply adjusting the angle of your arms during curls, extensions, and pressing movements to align with the scapular plane, you can dramatically improve muscle recruitment and reduce joint stress.
